Food Review: Copper Chimney – the renowned North Indian and Indian Chinese restaurant

Sis asked me along to the Copper Chimney media food tasting, sharing they have recently just revamped, so here I am!

Nestled in Syed Alwi Road in Little India, Copper Chimney provides authentic North Indian and Indian Chinese Halal food. This Indian F&B brand was also the only North Indian cuisine operator in the Formula One (F1) Race in Singapore from 2013 to 2016.

We started the media tasting session with some Mango Lassi and Mint Calamansi. I personally prefer the Mint Calamansi as it is very refreshing, but like the thick fragrance of the mango in the Mango Lassi.

Fun fact: lassi is a fermented food that contains many healthy bacteria, or probiotics, which decrease bloating and reduce inflammation – two key contributors to weight loss.

These drinks are served in tasting portions so that we can try out other drinks during the media tasting session

The first dish served to us is the Masala Roomali ($8.00), which was presented in a bowl interesting shape – it’s baked and backed over an inverted oven. The thin bread is filled with onions and tomato, baked till crispy and topped with a Masala seasoning. The spiciness level and be requested to adjust according to one’s taste, and I would say it’s just nice for me. It’s addictive like chips, and we can’t stop eating it, the whole plate was cleared by us pretty soon!

Instead of the common chicken tikka, we had Salmon Fish Masala ($18.00) for the night. It’s cooked in Copper Chimney’s custom made tandoor, and those who do not like the fishy smell of salmon definitely have no problem enjoying these tender salmon cube.

Kurkure Bhindi ($5.00) is a crispy snack of deep-fried ladies finger marinated in a few Indian spices. These golden-brown ladies fingers are good to be enjoyed on its own or paired with rice and dhal.

Chili Cheese Naan ($6.50) is something unique to me, this full-flavored dairy is topped with spice that tingles the taste buds.

Sultani Seekh Rice Platter ($29) is a sharing portion biryani – with basmati rice accompanied by lamb and chicken kebabs. In my opinion, the chicken kebabs can be juicer, but I love the fragrant basmati rice which is cooked to almost perfection.

This is my first time trying Triple Szechwan Rice ($15.00), an iconic Mumbai street food delight which has a combination of fried rice, hakka noodles, and spicy gravy. There are options of having it with chicken, prawn or purely vegetarian.

How can we have Indian food without curries? We tried Lucknow Murg Korma ($16.00), a luscious butter chicken fused with spices and topped with a touch of saffron, Chicken Lababdar ($15.00) is a spicier version of the butter chicken, and Madras Prawn Curry ($17.00) have a light and fragrant gravy is accompanied by a slight hint of sweetness from the prawns.

Chicken Lababdar is actually not as spicy as I expected, and reminds me of the sweet butter chicken taken in New Zealand, but I cannot decide if I prefer it or Madras Prawn Curry. =)

We ended the tasting session with traditional Indian desserts Jalebi with Rabdi ($8.00) and Pista Rasmalai ($7.50). Jalebi with Rabdi is a freshly made deep-fried crunchy snack filled with a rich syrup, and Pista Rasmalai is a combination of soft and spongy cottage cheese disks and dry fruit laced saffron flavored creamy milk sauce. I personally find Jalebi with Rabdi a bit too sweet for me despite me being a sweet tooth person, my preference for Pista Rasmalai might be partly due to my liking for pistachios.
