Departures – New Releases: Yanyun Chen, Hong Zhu An, Prabhavathi Meppayil

Glad to receive invite to the docents guided tour of Departures | New Releases: Yanyun Chen, Hong Zhu An, Prabhavathi Meppayil exhibition.

Through Xiuting’s sharing, we managed to gain a deeper understanding of the artists’ unique vision and the powerful stories woven into each thought-provoking work during their individual residency with STPI Creative Workshop.

The collection of works reflects on each artists’ residency as a point of divergence from their usual practices.

About the Artists and their works

Yanyun Chen

Dr. Yanyun Chen (Singapore) is a visual artist, researcher, and professor specializing in drawing, new media, and installation. Her work explores aesthetic, cultural, and technological influences on the body, often focusing on human and botanical forms.

Typically known for her dense charcoal drawings, Yanyun has ventured into print and papermaking. She seeks to push each piece further in a generative process, with every work representing a departure from her previous practice and iterations within the same series.

Hong Zhu An

Hong Zhu An, born in Shanghai, has been a full-time artist in Singapore since 1993. His work conveys a modern sensibility anchored in the richness of Chinese ink and paper history, reflecting his uprooted life in this age of globalization.

In works such as 初夏 (Early Summer) and 云间片帆 (Sail Between the Clouds), his strokes break free from conventional use, becoming masterful lines, splotches, wind currents, waves, and rivulets across colored paper pulp.

Prabhavathi Meppayil

Prabhavathi Meppayil, born in Bangalore, draws from the sensitive abstraction of her goldsmithing heritage. Her use of specific materials merges notions of tradition, craft, and modernist abstraction.

This approach moves beyond post-war reductionist tendencies, engaging with historical and geopolitical specificity. The visual repetition of basic geometric forms and the percussive tapping of tools add a dimensional layer to her work.

Free guided tour is available for registration.

Thanks Belinda and STPI for the invite!
